What Is the Bugs & Butterflies Kids Ranger Experience?
It’s a mini walking safari with a big heart. Instead of searching for lions or elephants from a vehicle, our junior rangers explore the smaller, safer, and endlessly fascinating world of insects, butterflies, plants, and animal signs. Guided by our experienced team – trained in both child engagement and bushcraft – children learn that every leaf, rock, and puddle tells a story.
This is not a classroom lesson. It is an interactive bush discovery where curiosity leads the way. The experience takes place in the Nkalange Sanctuary in and around Nzovu Rundu Luxury Camp, where the air hums with life and the mud holds footprints of hippo and waterbuck. Here, the tiniest creatures become the biggest stars.
What Young Explorers Actually Do
Armed with a magnifying glass and a sense of adventure, each child becomes a real ranger. Activities include:
-
Observing bugs up close – ants marching, beetles shining, caterpillars inching.
-
Watching insect behaviour – how a spider weaves its web, how a grasshopper leaps.
-
Learning the butterfly life cycle – from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to winged beauty.
-
Turning over rocks and logs – gently – to find hidden creatures like millipedes, slugs, and tiny frogs.
-
Keeping a bug journal or checklist – drawing, writing, or ticking off discoveries to take home as a safari trophy.
Every child receives their own Young Explorer kit – including a magnifying glass, a journal, and a pencil – to document their findings.
