According to Tonga tradition, Nyami Nyami – a serpent‑like deity – once roamed freely with his Wife, bringing life and balance to the Zambezi. But in 1957, the construction of the Kariba Dam changed everything. The mighty river was tamed, and Nyami Nyami’s Wife became trapped in the Lower Zambezi, separated from her husband by concrete and current.
