Nkalange Trail

Step out of the vehicle and into the rhythm of the wild. At Nzovu Rundu Luxury Camps, the Nkalange Trail offers an intimate walking safari through Lower Zambezi's untamed heart – foot‑by‑foot, sense by sense. Walk alongside legends: Papa Rundu the elephant, playful Baby Rundu, Kandingo the buffalo, and Batasti the hippo (whose father Winstone's spirit echoes in every grunt). Spot Dicksons' herd of waterbuck, hear the orchestra of fish eagles calling across the channel, and watch Alibaba and the Forty Thieves – a troop of baboons – tumble along the trail. Every step delivers up‑close encounters: fresh elephant prints, crocodiles sliding off banks, kingfishers diving. Your expert armed guide reads the bush like a book. Small groups, morning or afternoon walks, and premium bush sundowners complete this luxury experience. Walk with the wild mascots of Nzovu Rundu – where legends come alive.

Walk Amongst Legends – Our Beloved Camp Mascots

The Nkalange Trail is home to characters as captivating as any story. With an expert armed guide, you’ll track Papa Rundu the Elephant – a magnificent old bull whose wise eyes have watched the river change for decades. Nearby, playful Baby Rundu the baby elephant kicks up dust, never far from the protective embrace of the herd. On the floodplains, Kandingo the Buffalo stands like a dark sentinel, his massive bossed horns a testament to survival.

At the water’s edge, keep watch for Kiboko the Hippo, a grunting, wallowing giant who rules his stretch of the channel. And though his deceased father Winstone the Hippo no longer grazes the banks, his spirit lingers in every deep, resonant call that echoes across the lagoon at dusk – a reminder of the cycle of life that makes this wilderness sacred.
